Engineering Mechanics: Statics - SI Version 3rd Edition 0 Problems solved, Andrew Pytel, Jaan KiusalaasThe present invention relates to a composite material consisting of a fibrous reinforcement embedded in a synthetic resin, which can be used particularly as a friction material for a friction pad, a clutch plate, a brake lining or the like. Composite materials consisting of a fibrous reinforcement embedded in a synthetic resin are widely used as friction materials and lining materials. For example, Japanese Patent Application No. Hei 9-326649 describes a friction material comprising a core of synthetic resin and a fiber reinforcement embedded in the core. The friction material is obtained by impregnating a woven fabric with resin. The friction material has a characteristic of high abrasion resistance. Also, since the friction material has a fiber reinforcement embedded in a synthetic resin, it can be used as a lining material of a brake lining, a clutch plate and a pad. Furthermore, the use of carbon fibers as a reinforcing material has been studied. Carbon fibers have excellent mechanical properties and are also known to be excellent in thermal conductivity. However, carbon fibers are extremely brittle and hard and their friction characteristics are insufficient. In order to reduce the brittleness of carbon fibers, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open (kokai) No. Hei 5-153839 discloses a composite material comprising a fiber reinforcement embedded in a resin layer. Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open (kokai) No. Hei 8-102556 discloses a carbon fiber-reinforced resin composition comprising carbon fibers having an average fiber length of 2 to 6 mm and a modulus of elasticity of 2,000 kg/cm2 or more. Although it has been possible to reduce the brittleness of carbon fibers to some extent, there are still problems such that the coefficient of friction is low, the resin layer is peeled off in a friction or lining material and the processability of the material is poor. Furthermore, the foregoing problem, that is, the inadequate processability of the resin and peeling off of the resin layer, is caused, for example, when a resin composition obtained by dispersing the carbon fibers in an epoxy resin, a phenolic resin or the like is molded into a sheet. In this case, since the carbon fibers are not satisfactorily dispersed in the resin, air bubbles are easily trapped in the molded resin layer. When the molded resin layer is dried, the air bubbles
